Lecce, the capital of the homonymous province in the Salento, is situated in the southern boot heel, embedded between the Adriatic coast to the east and the Ionic coast to the west.
The pretty ground-floor apartment is located in immediate vicinity to a small, contemplative square in the traffic-reduced area of the old town of Lecce. From a comfortable kitchen-cum-living room with TV you enter the bathroom (shower/bidet/WC) and the friendly and well-tended double bedroom with two paned swing doors.
A rich Italian breakfast is included in the price. All ingredients are found in the fridge. The offering ranges from orange juice and coffee to croissants, cookies and yoghurt.
Upon request you will receive a residential parking permit upon your arrival. For loading and unloading purposes you may park shortly in front of the holiday apartment.
Lecce is also called the Florence of the South and truly lives up to its name. Churches, as well as numerous façades, display the world-famous Leccesian baroque. The omnipresent construction material was the especially malleable and therefore well-liked “Pietra Leccese”. It also stands out due to another particularity: depending on the time of day and solar irradiation, it either appears radiant white or glows in a warm golden tone.

Only a few paces from your holiday apartment there is the central square of the town, Piazza S. Oronzo, with the patron saint of the same name standing on a marble column. A beautiful building at the perimeter of the square with gothic elements is the sedile, the old town hall from the 16th century. Directly adjacent you can see the remnants of the Roman “Anfiteatro”, which was re-discovered during excavations after World War II. Another relic from the antique is the ”Teatro Romano”. These unique sceneries are used for performances in the summer and allow visitors to feel taken back to long-gone centuries.
Impressively the town gates (Porta Napoli, Porta Rudiae, Porta S. Biagio) stand out. They originate from different centuries and mark the entrances to the old town. Prime examples of the baroque are the façade of the Basilica S. Croce, the pride of all Leccesians, and the Piazza del Duomo. You will be impressed by the size of this baroque square and its charm. Be enchanted by the charisma of this place, especially at night, when the white façades are illuminated brightly.

Another Leccesian particularity is paper-mâché, the so-called cartapesta, the making of which is unique in the world. From straw board, mixed with water, flour and iron sulphate, traditionally artful nativity sets and saint figurines are created in skilled handiwork. The saint figures are especially suited for processions because of their little weight. But in the numerous little arts and craft shops other motives are produced today, as well.
Lovers of sweets will get their money’s worth. The countless pasticceries (pastry shops) offer everything you can imagine. “Dolci” in all possible variations make it hard to resist.

Especially typical for the region and very popular are the pasticciotti (shortcrust pastry with vanilla cream filling). But also the cornetti, likewise filled with crema or chocolate, are worth a sin.
Lecce offers many other attractions and additionally is an ideal starting point for excursions.
The town of Otranto, 45 km from Lecce, marks the most eastern spot of Puglia. Of art historical importance is the cathedral of Santa Annunziata with wonderfully preserved floor mosaic and crypt. Yet it is only one of many sights in the lively small coastal town.

Gallipoli, the „black pearl of the Salento“, in about the same distance to Lecce but situated on the Ionic coast, spreads typical Italian flair in the historic old town and makes strolling throught the alleys a real pleasure.
Sea lovers daily are spoilt for choice between the Ionic and Adriatic coast. If the hot southern Scirocco wind blows, the Adriatic coast (about 7 km) is recommended, for days with the northern, cooler Tramontana wind stream the Ionic coast (about 28 km). You will find crystal-clear water, get to know marvellous bays and experience a bathing pleasure of a special kind.
