Il Trullo del Nonno - Trullo apartment near Ostuni

Typically local living in the heart of Valle d’Itria

Valle d’Itria, located between the towns of Ostuni, Cisternino and Martina Franca, with all the whitish-grey, cone-shaped trulli roofs pointing skyward to the left and to the right of the roads appears like a fairy-tale landscape.

Shamans, so we are told, have here discovered a center of strong positive energy. And, according to legends, the mighty trunks of the centuries-old olive trees are home to witches and magicians.

Then we are back in our 'earthly world' and at the trullo of family Romanelli, where Nonno Pasquale sets the agenda. The former Colonnello (colonel), fondly called Lino by his family, his wife Maria and his daughter Michela show us round their summer residence.

Il Trullo del Nonno is found in idyllic location on a ca. 1 ha property planted with olive, almond and various fruit trees and enclosed by dry stone walls. According to the owners, relaxing is what really counts in this place.

The charm of rural Apulia

When Nonno Pasquale bought the premises between Ostuni and Cisternino 20 years ago, the family immediately decided that when renovating the old, plain farmhouse its original charm had to be preserved.
Original stone floors, wooden doors and window frames just like in former times and quite a number of restored original fitments make for the very special atmosphere inside Il Trullo del Nonno, an accommodation typical for the area, where up to 4 persons (family with two children) can spend their holidays.

To the left of the entrance area, there is a small chimney corner, which is followed by a cozy living area with sofa bed, writing table and reading chair. To the right lies the kitchen-dining area, which is plain but functional in furnishing (incl. two-burner gas stove, small oven, refrigerator with freezer compartment).

The trullo includes two bedrooms (double bed; bunk bed) and one bathroom (masonry shower cabin/WC/bidet).

Furnishing also includes free WiFi, children’s bed and washing machine (in a separate room behind the apartment). Heating makes Il Trullo del Nonno suitable for a stay also during low season. In summer, the strong and solid stone walls keep the heat outside.

A sunny terrace, prickly pears, caper bushes, olive, almond and mulberry trees

On the large terrace in front and at the side of the trullo, you find several seating accommodations and spots for sunbathing and relaxing; a pizza oven, an outdoor shower and a grill are found behind the apartment.

Pets too are welcome on the spacious premises.  A shady parking space is available in front of the accommodation.

Superbly tended Mediterranean premises surround the trullo and its lamia annex, which used to be a stable and shelter for the sheep. From April to October, Pasquale's daughter Michela and her husband Emanuele live in this separate part of the trullo complex. Do not hesitate to ask the couple about the most beautiful spot in Valle d'Itria, for culinary tips as well as tips for excursions - and experience unforgettable and authentic holidays in Apulia.

Shopping at Cisternino, sightseeing at Martina Franca, going to the beach at Torre Canne

Il Trullo del Nonno is a very convenient starting point for discovery tours in Valle d’Itria and of Apulia’s absolutely marvelous coasts. The towns of Cisternino, Ostuni, Alberobello, Martina Franca and Locorotondo are only a stone’s throw away and offer all kinds of cultural and culinary highlights.

Long sandy beaches are found both on the Adriatic coast and on the Ionian coast. The nearest beach at small seaside resort Torre Canne is about 18 km from Il Trullo del Nonno.

Shopping facilities, bars and restaurants are found at Cisternino (ca. 7 km off); in-between and small shopping can be done at the small grocery store about 3 km off.

Tip for an excursion: Locorotondo

Locorotondo, the name is based on the small town’s circular shape, is not the town closest to Trullo del Nonno. It is, however, owner Michela’s favorite place, where, on mild summer evenings, she and her husband meet with friends, enjoy the Apulian cuisine and a glass of Negroamaro, stroll through the flower adorned alleys of the borgo, which counts among Italy’s most beautiful towns. Do stop by!
