The house at the 'end' of Italy

Capo di Santa Maria di Leuca, the finis terrae (end of the earth) of the ancient world, is where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet.

Below the white faro (lighthouse), which stands there stoically marking the 'end of the earth',  and directly at the steep coast, lies a wonderful holiday home quite appropriately named Casa Finis Terrae.

The house is a pajara, enlarged by annexes added over the course of time. Typical for this kind of house is its façade – field stones fitted without the use of mortar. The pajare in general are strongly reminiscent of the trulli found in the area around Cisternino. In the Salento, however, the small round houses have not got the conical roofs so typical for the trulli. 

Apart from Casa Finis Terrae, there is another holiday home on the spacious premises, small Villino al Faro. The houses lie some distance apart, have got separate accesses of the property and are screened from each other’s view in such a way that privacy is guaranteed.

Amazing holidays at Casa Finis Terrae

Surrounded by a Mediterranean garden rich in varied flora and with plenty of space for up to six persons, the quaint house is the perfect accommodation to enjoy the 'sweet life' in the sunny south to the full - delighting in the breathtaking panorama of the two seas lying at its feet included.

Casa Finis Terrae includes a living room, a kitchen, three bedrooms and two bathrooms (shower/WC/bidet; shower/WC).

The living room with sofa, SAT-TV and fireplace is the centerpiece of the house, from where you access the other rooms.

In the well-appointed kitchen (incl. large 4-burner gas stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge-freezer), you can prepare whatever delicacies your stomachs desire. The kitchen opens onto the roofed part of the terrace, where you find a washing machine and an old stone oven at your disposal. 

Two bedrooms are furnished with a double bed each. One of the doubles is a fancy round room with skylight, because it is located in the original pajara; the other double offers access of the outdoor area. The third bedroom has twin beds, which can be rearranged to form a double.

Furnishing of Casa Finis Terrae also includes air conditioning with heating device (extra charge) and free WiFi.

Outdoor area with jacuzzi and sea view

On the large terrace in front of Casa Finis Terrae, you can gather round the rustic wooden table for meals, relax in the hammock with your holiday read or simply enjoy the view of the sea. There are two loungers to take it easy on in the sun; the outdoor shower is very convenient if you want to cool off in between.

The jacuzzi with sea view on the terrace in front of the bedroom with outdoor access can be used upon request and at extra charge. Use of the 'normal' pool, from where you have also got a view of the sea, is included in the rental price.

The surrounding garden is green and blooming with a variety of Mediterranean plants – ranging from pines and olive trees to hollies and various species of cacti.

Parking: You can park your car on the fenced premises.

Surroundings

The lighthouse and impressive Santuario di Santa Maria di Leuca with its large, lovely piazza are located in the immediate vicinity of Casa Finis Terrae.

Small, well-tended beaches are found at seaside resort Marina di Leuca, 1 km off. To get to the town's beaches and harbor, you can either take the car or walk there by descending the stairs of the cascade below the piazza.

Various bars, restaurants and stores open year-round are also found at Marina di Leuca.

Tips for excursions

The heart of the Salento beats at Lecce, university town and capital of the province – you should allow for enough time when visiting this pearl of the Baroque.

Take your time to discover the historic Old Town, which is off limits to cars. During the day, the sunlight adds a special glow to the golden-yellow limestone façades; in the evenings, they appear to be bathed in charming stage lighting by the floodlights.

Lecce is a place with a vibrant cultural scene, good shopping facilities and excellent gastronomy.
