Apulia-travel.com news

There are enough and good reasons why Matera is the designated European capital of culture. A ca. 1.5 hour drive by car takes you from the valley of the trulli in Apulia to the town with its famous sassi in the Basilicata region.

The sassi, caves dug into the rock, were still inhabited by the people of Matera until about 70 years ago. You can hardly imagine that such living conditions were still existent not too long ago right in Europe. It is surely interesting to get an idea and an impression of the way of life of Matera’s inhabitants, who were finally relocated by the government.

The surrounding area, the hilly Murgia plain, and the modern part of the town are definitely interesting, too. Matera is an absolutely worthwhile destination for an excursion during your holidays in Apulia!
